Alister Clifford was born in Hereford in 1958 and spent his formative years in the Monmouth and Abergavenny area. He qualified as an Art teacher and spent 23 years teaching in schools, first in Monmouthshire and then in Cardiff, before deciding to retire from teaching in order to concentrate on his own Art work.
“I have a great love for the Monmouthshire countyside and in particular, the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canal. Over the years I have witnessed a great deal of change. As the population has increased, new housing developments have spread out alarmingly around towns and the old rural ways of life are fast disappearing. Thankfully, the Monmouthshire, Abergavenny and Brecon Canal has been largely unaffected by these developments. Tourism and leisure activities may seem to invade the otherwise tranquil, peaceful canal, but they give the canal a purpose and ensure its future. I have been a boat owner myself for the past eight years and love every aspect of it.
My work is heavily influenced by the traditional (roses and castles) style of the narrowboat painters of old. I have tried to reflect the serenity of the canal, the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the relaxed pace of life enjoyed by the boating community.”
